The decreasing importance of acidification episodes with recovery from acidification: an analysis of the 30-year record from Birkenes, Norway

چکیده

The 30-year record 1975–2004 of weekly samples of streamwater chemistry from Birkenes, Norway, shows 106 acid episodes below the threshold of ANC−50μeq l−1. The frequency, severity and duration of episodes have diminished since about 1990 due to chemical recovery following reduced deposition of sulphur. In particular SO4-driven episodes in the first runoff following drought have become less intense and less frequent, whereas episodes driven by climate (wind, high flow) continue. The data show significant empirical relationships between strength of the driver, degree of chemical recovery, and severity of ANC depression.

Biomarker response of climate change-induced ocean acidification and hypercapnia studies on brachyurian crab Portunus pelagicus

A laboratory level microcosm analysis of the impacts of ocean acidification on the environmental stress biomarkers in Portunus pelagicus (Linneaus 1758)exposed to a series of pH regimes expected in the year 2100 (pH 7.5 and 7.0) and leakage from a sub-seabed carbon dioxide storage site (pH 6.5 - 5.5) was carried out. Levels of the antioxidant enzyme catalase, the phase II detoxificatio...

Cytoplasmic acidification reduces potassium channel activities in the endoplasmic reticulum of rat hepatocytes

Introduction: Intracellular pH (pHi) regulates essentially all aspects of cellular activities. However, it is unknown how endoplasmic reticulum (ER) potassium channels sense pHi. In this study, we investigate the direct effects of pHi on ER potassium channels. Methods: We used channel incorporation into the bilayer lipid membrane method. L-α-phosphatidylcholine, a membrane lipid, was extrac...

Acidification trends in south Swedish forest soils 1986-2008 - slow recovery and high sensitivity to sea-salt episodes.

Soil water chemistry in forest soils over 20 years was studied at nine sites in southern Sweden. The aim was to investigate the recovery from acidification and the influence of strong sea salt episodes that occur in the region. All sites but one showed signs of recovery from acidification along with the reduced sulphur deposition, but the recovery progress was slow and the soil water was in mos...

Recovery from acidification of lakes in Finland, Norway and Sweden 1990–1999

Sulphate deposition has decreased by about 60% in the Nordic countries since the early 1980s. Nitrogen deposition has been roughly constant during the past 20 years, with only a minor decrease in the late 1990s. The resulting changes in the chemistry of small lakes have been followed by national monitoring programmes initiated in the 1980s in Finland (163 lakes), Norway (100 lakes) and Sweden (...

Duodenal acidification stimulates gastric H2S release through upregulating mRNA expression of cystathionine gamma lyase

Introduction: It has been reported the alkaline response of pancreas to duodenal acidification is partly mediated through duodenal release of H2S, but till now the effect of duodenal acidification on gastric H2S release has not been investigated. Therefore, the present study designed to evaluate the effects of duodenal acidification on gastric H2S release and level of mRNA expression of cys...
